SERIES C

At present our main genealogies held on microfilm are those of F. E. Crowell and Clement V. Doane.

F. E. Crowell was a competent genealogist who compiled and published a series of genealogies entitled “New Englanders in Nova Scotia”, which were published in the Yarmouth Herald newspaper in the 1930′s.

This microfilm copy of his genealogies was produced by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, to which F. E. Crowell donated copies of the published genealogies as well as a series of unpublished ones.

There are 620 numbered genealogies, most consisting of one or two pages which trace the history of a wide range of families from their first appearance in New England until their move to Nova Scotia ca. 1759-1785.
These genealogies pertain to New England Planter families who came to take up the lands vacated by the deportation of the Acadians and also of some United Empire Loyalist families.

Clement V. Doane compiled an amazing amount of genealogical material over the course of his lifetime. Some of his work is held by the Isaak Walton Killam Library in Yarmouth, NS, and some by the Yarmouth County Historical Society. The majority of his genealogical and gravestone data were microfilmed by the Public Archives of NS many years ago. Our archives hold the microfilm copies.

C. V. Doane’s work is the work of a real amateur. His genealogies are fraught with errors but again can provide a starting point for researchers.
