OWNERSHIP HISTORY OF ITEM:-
These original glass negatives were produced circa 1895-1915 by Eugene Meuse, photographer and inventor of Amirault’s Hill, Yar. Co., NS. They later became the property his son-in-law, Charles Doucet, who had married Juliette Meuse, dau. of Eugene. They lived for many years at 2 Baker St., Yarmouth, NS where Juliette still lives in 1995. Charles Doucet was a photographer and artist himself. At different times he made prints from these negatives, and then in some cases made copy negatives from the prints. Our archives approached the family in 1993 about donating these important negatives to the archives. Paulette Phillips, dau. of Charles & Juliette Doucet was at the time living with her widowed mother at 2 Baker St. It was she who contacted other family members for their agreement on the placement of the negatives. Later another grandson of Eugene Meuse, Franklin Moulaison of Amirault’s Hill, NS took a number of these photographs through that community in an effort to further identify some of the photographs.

SUBJECT MATTER IN PHOTOGRAPH:-
Three young fishermen on the deck of a fishing vessel. All three are probably from Amirault’s Hill, Yar. Co., NS. The young man in the center is the photographer, Eugene Meuse, son of Gabriel & Genevieve (Boucher) Muise of Amirault’s Hill, NS; the other two men are unidentified. Eugene Meuse took several such “self-portraits.” He adopted the spelling “Meuse” for his surnname. All other family members used “Muise”, including his parents and siblings. The photograph is remarkable for its detail of fishermen’s clothing of the time. Note the fish scales on the photographer’s boots. He was about 15 years of age here. He started his work as a photographer very early in life.
